The South African Music Performance Rights Association (SAMPRA) has initiated legal action against the restaurant group, Life and Brand Portfolio, concerning allegations of unpaid music royalties. Formal charges have been filed with the Woodstock Police Station, representing a significant step in addressing reported non-compliance with licensing requirements pertaining to music played at their establishments.
Life and Brand Portfolio, recognized for its diverse collection of eateries including La Parada, Tiger’s Milk, Harbour House, Grand Africa, Lucky Fish and Chips, Live Bait, The Lookout, and Old Town Italy, has been accused of playing copyrighted music without proper licensing and failing to remit the associated fees.
According to the complaint lodged by SAMPRA, the group is purportedly in violation of legal obligations by neglecting to fulfill the necessary licensing fees, thereby infringing upon statutory regulations. This legal action underscores SAMPRA’s dedication to protecting the rights and interests of musicians and the wider music industry, advocating for equitable compensation for the use of copyrighted material.
The progression of these legal proceedings holds potential ramifications for intellectual property rights within the hospitality sector, emphasizing the importance of adhering to licensing protocols in the utilization of creative content.
