Man convicted for raping his mother: Shock and disgust grips community

Andries Mohwase (31) has been sentenced to 20 years direct imprisonment by the Moretele Regional Court for the heinous act of raping his 60-year-old mother. The court additionally declared him unfit to possess a firearm, emphasizing the severity of his crime.

The conviction stems from a horrifying incident that unfolded in their home at Stinkwater near Moretele on the evening of 17 July 2021. Mohwase, encountering his mother while she was cooking in the kitchen, forcibly dragged her to the bedroom and subjected her to sexual assault. Following her escape from this harrowing ordeal, she promptly reported the matter to his younger sister, who together with the victim, sought justice by reporting the crime to the police.

Arrested on 18 July 2021 and subsequently denied bail, Mohwase pleaded guilty to the offense. In seeking an appropriate sentence, state prosecutor Patricia Matlala underscored the profound shock and trauma inflicted upon the victim, her family, and the wider community. Magistrate Gilbert Sono echoed these sentiments, expressing profound disgust at the accused for his reprehensible actions.

Dr. Rachel Makhari, Director of Public Prosecutions in the North West, commended the diligent efforts of the state prosecutor, Warrant Officer Matthews Motiang from the South African Police Service (SAPS), and Court Preparation Officer Ephania Moselakgomo. Their dedication ensured that the accused received a lengthy jail term, underscoring the imperative for robust advocacy against the abuse of women, children, and the elderly.

The sentencing of Mohwase serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for collective action to combat gender-based violence and protect the most vulnerable members of society.
