Nine individuals tragically lost their lives when a bus transporting ANC supporters overturned near Paulpietersburg, in eDumbe Local Municipality in northern KwaZulu-Natal. The accident occurred on Sunday morning, following the party’s election manifesto launch in Durban.
The incident marks another devastating blow for the ANC, as just last month, six party supporters lost their lives in a bus accident near Tzaneen, Limpopo, while en route to Mpumalanga for the party’s January 8 anniversary celebrations.
KZN Department of Transport spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane provided details, stating that the accident occurred around 5 am, approximately 7 km from eDumbe town. The bus was returning from the ANC’s Mayihlome Rally at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
Tragically, nine fatalities were confirmed, with several other occupants sustaining injuries, four of whom are in critical condition. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
KZN Transport, Community Safety, and Liaison MEC Sipho Hlomuka expressed condolences to the affected families and wished the injured a speedy recovery. The ANC also mourned the loss of its members, acknowledging their commitment to the party’s cause.
IFP national spokesperson Mkhuleko Hlengwa extended condolences to the ANC and the families affected by the tragedy, emphasizing the need for road safety awareness during heightened political activities.
The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the risks involved in political mobilization efforts, highlighting the importance of safety precautions during campaign activities.
