Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane expressed deep concern over the arrest of a teacher from Thoko Thaba Secondary School in Tokoza, Ekurhuleni, for alleged possession of drugs on school premises. The incident occurred on Wednesday, February 14, 2024.
Reports indicate that the educator was found with a bag and box of drugs on school premises, leading to his arrest by the police. He appeared in court on Thursday, February 15, 2024.
MEC Chiloane expressed further concern over the delayed reporting of the incident by the School Management Team (SMT), leading to a planned community protest on Wednesday, February 21, 2024.
The Department of Education has initiated an investigation into the matter, and as a precautionary measure, the educator has been removed from the school.
“We are disappointed by this incident and strongly condemn such behavior. We will take appropriate action against it,” said MEC Chiloane, urging the community to allow the Department and law enforcement authorities to handle the matter for resolution.
