The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) is currently looking into allegations surrounding a leaked document pertaining to an investigation into a criminal syndicate operating within Mangaung prison.
The syndicate is accused of aiding convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester in his escape.
DCS spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo stated on Monday that the department could neither confirm nor deny the allegations at this time, as investigations, including intelligence gathering, are still ongoing.
Nxumalo emphasized that DCS is committed to addressing media inquiries, regardless of how sensational they may seem, but stressed the importance of awaiting the conclusion of investigations before making any definitive statements.
According to Nxumalo, the reported leaked document pertains to an operation conducted by the DCS National Emergency Support Team at Mangaung Correctional Centre from May 22 to May 25, 2023. This operation involved gathering information from inmates and officials, with a focus on intelligence-driven leads.
Nxumalo clarified that much of the information contained in the leaked report is based on verbal accounts provided by offenders, requiring further investigation to determine its accuracy. Additionally, aspects of the investigation are related to Bester’s escape, which is currently sub judice.
Nxumalo criticized a Sunday Times article for presenting the allegations as factual without acknowledging that they are still under investigation. He stressed the importance of distinguishing between allegations and confirmed facts in reporting.
