Johannesburg and Soweto struck by 3.4 magnitude earthquake

Two earthquakes have rattled Johannesburg in the span of two weeks, with the most recent one registering a magnitude of 3.4, according to data from the Council of Geoscience.

The tremor, which occurred shortly before 21:00 last night, was pinpointed by the South African National Seismograph Network (SANSN) to an area south of Johannesburg, specifically in Soweto. Earthquake List reported that the epicenter was located 9km northeast of Westonaria, Gauteng.

This event marks the second earthquake to hit the region in as many weeks, following a previous tremor on January 23. Additionally, just over a month ago, Gauteng experienced a 2.5 magnitude earthquake.

The Council of Geoscience gathers earthquake data through the SANSN, providing both automated and analyzed assessments of seismic activity in the area.

Further updates on this recent earthquake will be provided as more information becomes available.
