Operation “Shanela” strikes again: Over 1300 arrests made in Free State crackdown

In a relentless effort to combat crime, Operation “Shanela” has once again made significant strides in the ongoing battle against criminal activities in the Free State province. From Monday, 29 January 2024, to 04 February 2024, a total of 1317 arrests have been confirmed, showcasing the efficacy of the multidisciplinary operation in tackling various crimes.

The operation, which encompasses a collaborative effort from multiple law enforcement agencies, has resulted in arrests spanning a wide array of criminal activities. Notably, 25 suspects were apprehended for malicious damage to property, while an undercover sting operation targeting illicit mining led to the arrest of eight individuals, with authorities seizing gold-bearing material and equipment.

In a bid to address immigration concerns, 59 illegal immigrants were discovered and taken into custody, while two suspects found in possession of firearms were also arrested, further bolstering efforts to curb gun-related crimes.

The diligent work of detective services, particularly through tracing and tracking operations, has yielded significant results, with 458 suspects apprehended for their involvement in various criminal activities. Among the arrests were individuals implicated in serious offenses such as murder, rape, car hijacking, assault, and burglary. Additionally, two unlicensed illegal liquor premises were shut down as part of the operation.

Operation “Shanela” has also intensified its focus on combating drug-related crimes, resulting in the confiscation of drugs including mandrax, crystal meth, and dagga. A total of 24 suspects were arrested in connection with drug offenses, underscoring the operation’s commitment to addressing the scourge of substance abuse within communities.

Furthermore, road safety enforcement efforts were ramped up, with six individuals arrested for driving under the influence and 74 others apprehended for contravening the Traffic Act during multidisciplinary roadblock operations.

The success of Operation “Shanela” highlights the effectiveness of collaborative law enforcement efforts in cracking down on crime and ensuring the safety and security of residents in the Free State province. Authorities remain steadfast in their commitment to maintaining law and order and will continue to pursue perpetrators to bring them to justice.
