In a significant development, President Cyril Ramaphosa has authorized the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to launch a thorough investigation into the alleged corruption involving Pepi Silinga, the CEO of Transnet National Ports Authority, amounting to a staggering R300 million. The Democratic Alliance (DA) has welcomed this decision, emphasizing the gravity of the allegations and the substantial sum of money at stake.
Dr. Mimmy Gondwe, DA Shadow Minister of Public Enterprises, expressed satisfaction with the President’s prompt response to their request. In a media statement released on 30th January 2024, Dr. Gondwe highlighted the party’s concern over the serious nature of the allegations and the necessity for an impartial and comprehensive investigation.
Last week, the DA officially urged President Ramaphosa to authorize the SIU investigation. In their letter, the opposition party underscored the need for a transparent and efficient inquiry into the allegations surrounding Silinga, given the scale of the financial irregularities.
Additionally, the DA has applauded Pepi Silinga’s decision to take a leave of absence while the internal probe by Transnet is underway. Dr. Gondwe stated that the party had reservations about the fairness and thoroughness of an internal investigation with Silinga remaining in office.
While acknowledging that both Transnet and SIU investigations are still in their early stages, the DA remains vigilant. Dr. Gondwe emphasized the party’s commitment to seeking regular updates on the progress of both investigations, ensuring that they are conducted with the necessary speed and efficiency.
As the country awaits the outcome of the investigations, the DA’s proactive stance reflects a commitment to accountability and transparency in addressing corruption within critical institutions. The SIU’s involvement marks a significant step toward unravelling the details of the alleged Transnet scandal and holding those responsible accountable.
