Order to kill Senzo Meyiwa allegedly given by Kelly Khumalo, reveals lead Investigator’s statement

In the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, late Senzo Meyiwa’s then girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo, has been implicated as the person who allegedly gave the order for the killing of the former soccer star, according to statements by the lead investigator, Brigadier Bongani Gininda, at the Pretoria High Court on Wednesday afternoon.

Accused 1 and 2 in the trial, Muzi Sibiya and Bongani Ntanzi, have reportedly pointed to Kelly Khumalo as the orchestrator of the crime. The revelation was made during the ongoing trial within a trial examining the admissibility of confession statements. Eyewitnesses present the night of Meyiwa’s death at Kelly’s Vosloorus home claim that two intruders demanded cellphones and money, leading to a scuffle in which Meyiwa was fatally wounded.

According to Gininda, Ntanzi, identified as the taller intruder, confessed to a commissioned officer on June 19 and later made a further confession implicating Khumalo in the killing. He stated, “He also implicated Miss Kelly Khumalo as the person who gave the order to kill Senzo Meyiwa.”

This marks the second instance of Kelly Khumalo’s name being brought up in the trial. Cellphone records previously revealed calls between the number used by accused 5, Fisojuhle Ntuli, and a number registered under Kelly’s name. The calls took place on August 2, 2014, and October 15, 2014, 11 days before Meyiwa’s murder, according to cellphone expert Colonel Lambertus Steyn. The contents of the conversations remain undisclosed.

Gininda further shared that, based on Sibiya’s confession, he was standing outside when Meyiwa was shot, contradicting the naming of Marco Buthelezi as the alleged shooter. The investigation allegedly points to accused 3, Mncube, as the one who pulled the trigger. Photos from Mncube’s phone reportedly matched the description of the accused entering the house with a gun during the incident.
