Music icon Elton John has officially joined the exclusive EGOT club after securing an Emmy on Monday night. The 76-year-old legendary musician added an Emmy to his collection, winning in the Outstanding Variety Special (Live) category for “Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium,” a special performance live-streamed on Disney Plus from Los Angeles as part of his “Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour.”
Expressing his gratitude, Elton John stated, “I am incredibly humbled to be joining the unbelievably talented group of EGOT winners tonight. Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout my career; I am incredibly grateful.” With this win, Elton John becomes the 19th person to achieve EGOT status, having already won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.
The prestigious EGOT achievement has been a rare feat in the entertainment industry, with only a select few managing to win all four major honors. Viola Davis was the previous inductee in 2023, becoming the 18th person and the third Black woman to attain EGOT status when she won a Grammy for reading her memoir “Finding Me.”
The term “EGOT” was coined by actor Philip Michael Thomas in 1984, representing the desire to win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony within five years, though he himself did not achieve this goal. Past EGOT recipients include Audrey Hepburn, Mel Brooks, Whoopi Goldberg, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and Tim Rice.
Due to recovery from knee surgery, Elton John was unable to attend the Emmys in person to accept the award, as reported by the Hollywood Reporter.
