South African Airways (SAA) resumes direct flights to Perth, Australia

South African Airways (SAA) is thrilled to announce the reintroduction of its flights to Perth, Australia, setting the stage for enhanced connectivity and convenience for travelers. The inaugural flight from Johannesburg to Perth is scheduled for 28 April 2024, with bookings opening today, Monday 8 January 2024.

In a statement, Professor John Lamola, CEO of SAA, expressed enthusiasm for the return of the Perth route, emphasizing that this move aligns with the airline’s strategic plans to bolster its operations and profitability. He highlighted SAA’s unique capabilities as a national carrier, equipped with wide-body aircraft that offer long-haul intercontinental air connectivity for South Africa.

This marks the second interoceanic route reopening for SAA within six months, following the successful launch of the Sao Paulo, Brazil route on 31 October 2023. A Southern Hemisphere travel package now allows seamless journeys from Perth to Sao Paulo through Johannesburg, creating exciting possibilities for travelers.

As a proud member of the Star Alliance, SAA aims to enhance the travel experience for customers across the 25 co-member airlines of the alliance, facilitating seamless travel into and out of Australia.

“The recommencement of the route provides an easier and direct passage for both leisure and business travelers, promoting trade and cultural exchange between South Africa and Australia,” said Lamola. Approximately 80% of the target market consists of individuals visiting family and friends, reflecting the historical ties between the two nations.

The reintroduction of the Perth route also brings exciting opportunities for SAA Voyager frequent flyers to earn and redeem air miles. One SAA Voyager mile is awarded for every R1.60 spent on air ticket purchases. Voyager members in Australia are eligible for the HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card, providing additional opportunities to earn Voyager miles and attain Elite credit card status based on their spending.

Lamola concluded by expressing SAA’s commitment to expanding its global footprint and becoming a respected leader in the aviation sector. The launch of the Perth route is a testament to this ambition, and Lamola is confident that SAA will achieve its vision of expanding its footprint to over 20 destinations this year.
