ANC Secretary General Mbalula criticizes Zuma, acknowledges party’s failed defense

The African National Congress (ANC) Secretary General, Fikile Mbalula, broke his silence on former President Jacob Zuma’s involvement with the Umkhonto Wesizwe, criticizing him for numerous failures during his term. Speaking at the cadres’ assembly in Barberton as part of the ANC’s 112th-anniversary celebrations in Mpumalanga, Mbalula expressed dissatisfaction with Zuma’s leadership.

Despite initially vowing not to delve into Zuma’s issues, Mbalula delivered a blistering rebuke, suggesting that despite the ANC’s efforts, Zuma was a leader who could not be polished or sanitized. Mbalula openly admitted to defending Zuma in the past, recalling an instance where they argued in Parliament that a swimming pool was a “fire pool” in defense of the then-president.

During his address, Mbalula revealed his sadness at witnessing Zuma’s incarceration in 2021. He also expressed gratitude to Zuma for appointing him as a minister following a contentious ANC conference.

Mbalula’s comments highlight the internal challenges and divisions within the ANC, with senior members openly acknowledging past attempts to defend Zuma amid criticism and controversy. The party continues to navigate complex issues and internal dynamics as it commemorates its 112th anniversary.
