Proteas stage remarkable comeback, dismiss India in dramatic turnaround at Newlands

In a stunning turn of events at Newlands, the Proteas displayed a remarkable fightback, dismissing India in emphatic style on the first day of the second Test on Wednesday. After bundling out South Africa for a mere 55 runs, India, seemingly in control, lost their last six wickets for no runs in just 11 balls, finishing their innings at 153 and providing the hosts with a lead of 98 runs.

India appeared to be heading towards a substantial advantage as they reached 153 for four, with the experienced duo of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul holding firm at the crease. However, the Proteas’ resurgence was ignited by fast bowler Lungi Ngidi, who claimed crucial wickets, including Rahul’s dismissal caught behind, turning the tide in favor of the home team.

Kagiso Rabada joined the party by dismissing Kohli for 46 and caught at second slip in the next over, further denting India’s momentum. The quick succession of wickets saw Mohammed Siraj run out and Prasidh Kumar caught at second slip, leaving India reeling.

Earlier in the day, Mohammed Siraj had delivered a career-best performance, claiming six wickets for 15 runs as South Africa collapsed to their lowest total in almost 92 years. Despite the Proteas’ initial struggle, the spirited comeback not only restricted India’s lead but also set the stage for a gripping continuation of the second Test.

Having secured victory in the first Test in Centurion, the Proteas, with their resilient performance, aimed to maintain their longstanding record of never losing a Test series on home soil to India. The dramatic events at Newlands have added an extra layer of anticipation and excitement to the ongoing battle between these two cricketing powerhouses.
