In a recent roadblock operation in KwaZulu-Natal, a man was apprehended by police during a stop and search on the N3 near the Mariannhill toll gate. The motorist was driving a vehicle without registration plates and with an expired permit, prompting law enforcement to conduct a thorough inspection.
Provincial spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda revealed that during the search, the individual was discovered in possession of approximately R90,000 in cash. The man claimed that the substantial amount was earmarked for purchasing Christmas clothes. Additionally, he was found to be carrying a licensed firearm.
The provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, was personally involved in the stop and search as part of assessing the festive season operational readiness.
Colonel Netshiunda stated that the man has been detained pending investigations into whether the vehicle was used in the commission of a crime and to determine the legitimacy of the funds. If no foul play is established regarding the money, the suspect may be released. However, the vehicle will only be released after obtaining proper license plates.
This incident is part of broader efforts by law enforcement to ensure safety during the festive season. Earlier this month, a woman was arrested for drunk driving in the Pietermaritzburg area, with the Department of Transport emphasizing ongoing operations targeting strategic areas to reduce accidents and fatalities during the festive season and beyond. The operations include stop and search, vehicle and driver screenings, and document checks to ensure road safety.
