Alleged serial robber abandons bail amidst grave charges

In a startling turn of events, Robert Gontse Moeti (39), the alleged serial robber from Atteridgeville, opted to abandon his bail application at the Atteridgeville Magistrates’ Court. Moeti faces a litany of charges, including two counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder, five counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, and two counts of possession of unlicensed firearms, as well as possession of unlicensed ammunition.

The charges stem from an incident on November 12, 2023, when Moeti purportedly visited the Saulsville hostel in Atteridgeville, opening fire on three individuals before hastily making his escape. Tragically, two of the victims sustained injuries, while one succumbed to the gunshot wounds and died upon arrival at Kalafong Hospital.

The Organized Crime Unit of the South African Police Service (SAPS) apprehended Moeti on November 15, 2023, at Kameeldrift, following a thorough investigation. Subsequent to his arrest, a search of his residence uncovered two unlicensed firearms and unlicensed ammunition.

Prior to his apprehension, Moeti had been the subject of a police manhunt for his alleged involvement in a series of house robberies between July and November 2023. The incidents were reported in various areas, including Pretoria, Centurion, Gezina, and Atteridgeville. The modus operandi reportedly involved Moeti robbing individuals at gunpoint, relieving them of personal belongings such as laptops, cellphones, and jewelry.

During Moeti’s court appearance, facilitated by his legal representative, he communicated his decision not to pursue a bail application. The court subsequently postponed the matter to January 26, 2024, to allow for further investigations.
