Police crackdown on illicit tobacco trade in Northern Cape operations

In a concerted effort to curb the sale and trafficking of counterfeit goods, the Northern Cape Police have intensified operations targeting illicit cigarettes and tobacco products. The crackdown, led by the Provincial Organised Crime Unit and Provincial Crime Intelligence, included collaboration with various law enforcement agencies.

The operation, which commenced on Monday, November 13, 2023, saw the participation of the Provincial Firearm, Liquor and Second Hand Goods Unit (FLASH), Kimberley Public Order Police (POP), Kuruman K9, Highway Patrol and Crime Prevention Units, Prieska VISPOL, South African Revenue Services (SARS) Customs, National Rapid Response team, and the Department of Home Affairs Immigration Services.

Focused on intelligence-driven efforts, operations were executed simultaneously in Kimberley, Kuruman, and Prieska. The multi-disciplinary approach proved successful, leading to the seizure of various brands of illicit cigarettes and wooka tobacco with an estimated value of approximately R7.8 million. Fines totaling R1,500-00 were issued for dealing in illicit medicine.

Shop owners found dealing in these illegal products were served with compliance notices, requiring them to provide authorities with the necessary documentation permitting them to possess such consignments.

During the operations, a 33-year-old Bangladeshi national was arrested on a previous warrant of arrest. The suspect is set to appear in the Kimberley Magistrates Court in the coming days.

Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, praised the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies. She emphasized the urgency of addressing the current levels of illicit trade and affirmed the police’s commitment to strengthening compliance control measures in the ongoing fight against illicit-related crimes.
