Fire crews rush to tackle blaze in Johannesburg CBD shop

Firefighters are currently tackling a blaze at the intersection of Jeppe Street and Polly Street in central Johannesburg on Wednesday morning.

In the early hours of Wednesday, two small shops were engulfed in flames, as confirmed by Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS). The cause of the fire is under investigation, and fortunately, no fatalities or injuries have been reported.

Xolile Khumalo, the spokesperson for Joburg EMS, emphasized the importance of exercising caution with electrical appliances and braziers. Khumalo urged the Johannesburg community to ensure that these devices are switched off or extinguished when not in use.

There is a growing concern about the safety of buildings in the city center, following a series of fires in recent years. An ongoing inquiry into the Usindiso building fire, which claimed the lives of nearly 80 people, is examining how the hijacking of buildings may have contributed to such disasters in the city.

Ownership details of the currently affected building remain unclear, and it is uncertain whether this incident is linked to the safety concerns raised in recent months. Authorities continue to investigate the situation.
