South Africa’s rugby heroes returned to their homeland on Tuesday, greeted by an adoring crowd, after achieving a remarkable feat by successfully defending their world championship title against New Zealand with an 11-12 victory in France over the weekend.
Despite the cold and wet weather, thousands of devoted Springboks supporters gathered at O.R. Tambo International Airport to extend their warm welcome to the squad, which had just become the first nation to clinch the World Cup for a fourth time.
As the excitement reached its peak, the airport’s arrivals terminal erupted in cheers and celebration when team captain Siya Kolisi proudly entered, cradling the Webb Ellis trophy alongside his fellow teammates.
The atmosphere was a vibrant sea of green and gold, with fans donning their Springboks jerseys, waving South African flags, and brandishing placards adorned with heartfelt congratulatory messages for the victorious squad.
In a gesture of support, individuals wearing Springbok jerseys or any South African colors were granted free travel on the Gautrain train service to reach the airport. The roads leading to the main terminals were jammed throughout the morning as fans rushed to be part of the historic moment.
A South African Police Service band set the tone by performing the national anthem and other beloved South African tunes, creating a spirited welcome for the returning squad.
The Springboks’ return coincided with President Cyril Ramaphosa’s official declaration of December 15 as a public holiday to commemorate the team’s remarkable victory. In his address, President Ramaphosa declared the day to be one of hope, celebration, and unity for the nation.
To honor the Springboks’ achievement, a four-day victory parade is scheduled to take place in major cities such as Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, and Durban, providing fans with an opportunity to catch a glimpse of the coveted Webb Ellis trophy.
Among the players, Siya Kolisi, who has emerged as a beloved figure for his leadership in securing back-to-back World Cup victories, received thunderous cheers from the ecstatic fans as the squad arrived at the international arrivals terminal.
Supporter Joseph Malherbe shared his sentiments, stating, “This means a lot to the country because rugby always unites us even though the country is facing so many problems; it’s a special moment for us.”
The victory tour of the squad is set to kick off on Thursday, promising more moments of joy and unity for South Africa.
