Impeached Public Protector Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane joins EFF, citing shared values

In a surprising turn of events, Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane, who was recently impeached from her position as Public Protector, has announced her affiliation with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). Mkhwebane cited her belief in the EFF’s seven cardinal pillars and her commitment to continue protecting the rights of South Africans as her motivation for joining the party.

Mkhwebane’s removal from office came after an overwhelming majority of parliamentarians voted in favor of her impeachment last month. This decision followed a report by the Section 194 inquiry, which recommended her removal on the grounds of incompetence and misconduct.

On Monday, Mkhwebane, flanked by other EFF members, made the official announcement of her new political allegiance.

Addressing the media, Mkhwebane clarified that the EFF was her first political home and emphasized that she had never been associated with the African National Congress (ANC).

Regarding her decision to join the EFF, Mkhwebane asserted that it was not fueled by any sense of disgruntlement, despite her perceived harsh treatment by both the ANC and the Democratic Alliance (DA).

“I joined the EFF because I could relate to their seven cardinal pillars. Our people are landless, and the EFF is advocating for the expropriation of land without compensation,” Mkhwebane explained.

She further elaborated on her belief that the state should play an active role in creating an environment conducive to the empowerment of the poor and marginalized, especially in economic matters.

“I believe that the state should own economic structures, and education should be free,” Mkhwebane stated. “As Public Protector, I pledged to protect the poor and marginalized. With the EFF, I can continue to fulfill that commitment.”

Mkhwebane emphasized that her decision to join the EFF was not driven by aspirations for positions within the party. Rather, it stemmed from her desire to champion the rights of the disadvantaged and hold those in power accountable.

“I was subjected to harsh treatment by the ANC and DA, but I could endure it to expose their shortcomings in serving the interests of the poor and marginalized,” she declared, pledging her loyalty and commitment as an active and disciplined member of the EFF.
