Pakistan’s President Says He Did Not Sign New National Security Laws

Pakistan’s President Arif Alvi claims that he did not sign new national security laws that would give authorities more power to prosecute people for acts against the state and military, a move the law ministry said was unconstitutional.

According to Pakistan’s constitution, if the president doesn’t sign a draft bill or return it back with his observations or objections within 10 days after it has already been through the two houses, it will become law.

“As the president didn’t sign and return the bill within 10 days, it became a law,” caretaker Law Minister Ahmad Irfan Aslam told a news conference.

As news of the president’s denial spreads, public and political figures have expressed a range of opinions and reactions. Some citizens are sceptical of the president’s statement, viewing it as a political manoeuvre to avoid responsibility for the controversial laws.

Political figures have also weighed in on the issue, with some expressing support for the president’s denial while others question the integrity of the legislative process.
