Collen Malatji Elected ANC Youth League President Amidst Disgruntlement from National Youth League Task Team Members

The election of Collen Malatji as the new President of the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) has generated mixed reactions within the organization. While Malatji’s election marks a new chapter for the ANC’s youth wing, there is apparent disgruntlement among some members of the National Youth League Task Team (NYLTT) over the process and outcome of the weekend’s elections.

Collen Malatji, a charismatic and dynamic leader, emerged victorious in the highly contested election for the ANC Youth League presidency. His election comes at a critical time when the ANC seeks to rejuvenate and reinvigorate its youth wing, which has historically played a significant role in shaping the party’s future.

However, despite the enthusiasm surrounding Malatji’s election, tensions arose over the perceived lack of inclusivity and transparency during the election process. Some members of the National Youth League Task Team, who were appointed to oversee the youth league’s activities during the interim period, expressed discontent with the manner in which the elections were conducted.

The task team members, including Sebang Mothlabi, Anela Matuntuta, Tlangi Mogale, Palo Jama, Mayibuye Bangani, Karabo Mohale and Itumeleng Ntsube raised issues around the credentials required for the conference, which resulted in members of the Chris Hani and Tshwane regions not being able to register and participate as voting delegates.

They called for an investigation into the alleged irregularities and for measures to be taken to ensure greater inclusivity and transparency in future youth league elections. These members emphasised the importance of upholding the democratic values of the ANC and ensuring that all voices are heard within the organisation.

The ANC, as a whole, faces the task of navigating these internal challenges and ensuring the ANC Youth League remains a vibrant and influential force within the party. It is essential that the organization addresses the concerns raised by the NYLTT members and takes steps to strengthen internal democracy and transparent processes.

The election of Collen Malatji as ANC Youth League President presents an opportunity for the youth wing to reclaim its role as a powerful voice for young people within the party and the broader society. As the newly elected leader, Malatji will be tasked with building unity, mobilising young members, and articulating their aspirations and concerns effectively.

The ANC Youth League’s future success will depend on its ability to harness the energy, ideas, and passion of its members, as well as its commitment to inclusivity and democracy. It is essential that the ANC leadership, along with Collen Malatji, work together to address the concerns of the NYLTT members and create a platform for constructive dialogue and engagement.

The coming months will be critical in shaping the direction of the ANC Youth League under Collen Malatji’s leadership. As the ANC Youth League moves forward under new leadership, the voices of all members must be heard and respected in order to avoid repeating the mistakes that prevented internal polls being held by the structure for eight years. The commitment to inclusivity, transparency, and democracy will be vital in revitalising the youth league and ensuring its relevance in shaping the ANC’s future leaders.
