South African Authorities Impose Anti-Dumping Duties on Frozen French Fries, Protecting Local Potato Industry

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has imposed anti-dumping duties on frozen French fry imports in response to the recommendations made by the International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC).

The commission conducted an investigation into allegations of dumping by Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany, and concluded that it had caused harm to the South African potato industry. The anti-dumping duties, which went into effect recently, aim to protect local farmers and processors from unfair competition and ensure fair prices.

The decision, effective immediately, marks the conclusion of a year-long anti-dumping investigation initiated by ITAC in November 2021. The move has been welcomed by the South African potato industry, as it helps level the playing field and promotes job creation and economic growth.

The implemented tariffs for the three countries range from 67.33% to 239.10%. ITAC’s research report confirms the dumping of frozen potato chips and emphasizes the importance of maintaining quality standards and stability for consumers.
